We need to keep reminding leaders that a strong social safety net is what keeps us ALL safe. ✊🏾

Would love to hear what they came up with! We'll be talking about exactly that this Friday on an @urbaninstitute.bsky.social webinar🙌🏾

I am weary.

I hold on to hope.

I just wish we had leaders that actually inspired it.

*Policies* can't be the only prescription to heal what's clearly broken in our nation.

While policy change is important, what is needed most is communal solidarity & accountability.

A commitment that won't be dependent on if an issue directly impacts us or our loved ones.

This is happening to our neighbors' families , our friends' families.

It is not just happening "over there."

It is happening to us.

Tomorrow I’ll be joining an Instagram Live conversation hosted by @sahanjournal.bsky.social to talk about how the One Bloated Bankrupt Bill (OBBB) passed by Congress & signed in to law by the President earlier this month could impact immigrant communities enrolled in #Medicaid in MN. #TuneIn #MedSky

How can we do the most good for families—especially in fraught times?

Join me, my Aspen Ascend co-fellow Teresa Ramos & Anne Mosle Monday June 16th for Big Moves, Bold Partnerships, a convo on how state leaders can scale what works & stay rooted in community needs. 🙌🏾

"The researchers found that, on average, it costs Medicaid $179,000 to save a year of life ... less than the combined public and private spending on interventions like safety inspections for cars or the removal of asbestos from buildings"

Equity requires targeted investment.

Justice requires racism-conscious policy.

Healing requires truth-telling.

If we’re serious about saving lives — now and in the next crisis — we cannot afford to be colorblind.

The results?

Black, Indigenous & other marginalized communities saw higher infection, hospitalization & death rates.

American Indian & Alaska Native populations had the steepest declines in life expectancy, followed by Hispanic & Black Americans.

Here are some of my own recommendations to begin your journey toward deeper solidarity.

Start where you are.
Do what you can.
Add where you’re able.

But please—start.

The myth that these are separate issues only serves to maintain the status quo.

The longer we let it fester, the harder it will be—for all of us & for our children—to realize true freedom, equity & justice.

A stark reminder: Understanding what we’re facing is essential.

Unified action is even more crucial.

So I urge folks to start (or continue!) showing up in solidarity—
for Palestinians in Gaza
& for communities under siege here in the U.S.

It is all connected.

We called for a shift in how we practice core ethical principles.

It’s not enough to name the values—we must live them in our institutions, our policies, our care.

We didn’t plan it this way, but April 4th—the day of the talk—marked 57 years since Dr. King’s assassination.

The title was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1967 book:
“Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?”

It shaped how we framed policy and practice toward pediatric racial health equity.

This was a core theme of the @umnbioethics.bsky.social Grand Rounds I gave Friday with my friend & colleague Dr. Monique Jindal:
“Where Do We Go From Here? Eliminating Racial & Ethnic Pediatric Health Disparities in 2025 & Beyond.”
April 7, 2025 at 3:44 AM
True solidarity in the fight for justice & liberation challenges us to use our power in new ways—ways we haven’t before.

It’s a deeper, ongoing practice—not a single moment.

As we learn more specifics about how cuts are being structured we'll work to provide updated data & I'll share what evidence exists on the likely impacts based on past attempts (& current policies) that gut or underfund health care & rob our communities of their deserved dignity.

So we are sharing the data on how Medicaid is the foundation of Minnesota's health care infrastructure & one of the smartest investments in MN's future.
