When the ship hit the iceberg, Mariyam’s mother (Hinnah) injured her finger when her door slammed shut from the impact as she was waiting for Mariyam to return. Hinnah was instructed to stay in her cabin and pray but her intuition told her to get Jirjis ready and make her way up to the boat deck.

Previously, in 1905, their father (Darwīsh Tu'mah) traveled to America and settled in Dowagiac, Michigan where he worked on an onion farm in order to save money to bring his wife and children to the states.

In February 1912, Mariyam, along with her mother, younger brother, and other members of their village, departed from Tibnīn, Lebanon by camel caravan to Beirut. From Beirut, they boarded a freighter headed for Marseille, France and then took a train to Cherbourg where they boarded the Titanic.
