On her deathbed, she is pictured taking the oath of loyalty to become a citizen of the United States. She passed away in August of 1953 at the age of 50 in Flint, Michigan.

Seven years later she marries a Lebanese immigrant, Nicholas Haddad. They later have 6 children. Emma, William, Daniel (my great grandfather), pearl, Gerald, and Francis.

After arriving in New York, they were cared for at Saint Vincent Hospital and then left to meet their father in Dowagiac.

She quickly grabbed some valuables and took Mariyam up to the boat deck where Jirjis was waiting and boarded a lifeboat. Hinnah shielded Mariyam and Jirjis’s eyes with her cloak as she watched people jump to their death.

Upon reaching the boat deck, she instructed Jirjis to stay by a lifeboat while she went to look for Mariyam. As she arrived back in steerage, she found Mariyam walking out of an empty cabin where she had been sleeping.

When the ship hit the iceberg, Mariyam’s mother (Hinnah) injured her finger when her door slammed shut from the impact as she was waiting for Mariyam to return. Hinnah was instructed to stay in her cabin and pray but her intuition told her to get Jirjis ready and make her way up to the boat deck.

While aboard the Titanic, Mariyam and her brother (Jirjis) enjoyed running around the hallways and playing in vacant cabins.

Previously, in 1905, their father (Darwīsh Tu'mah) traveled to America and settled in Dowagiac, Michigan where he worked on an onion farm in order to save money to bring his wife and children to the states.

In February 1912, Mariyam, along with her mother, younger brother, and other members of their village, departed from Tibnīn, Lebanon by camel caravan to Beirut. From Beirut, they boarded a freighter headed for Marseille, France and then took a train to Cherbourg where they boarded the Titanic.
