except you don't if you're doing it digitally but you still use up time. That *fear* is still there. And it's wonderful to come out of it on the other side, a smarter failure.

*Don'ts
Also addendum: An animated movie is a wonder of the world, a result of a lot of love and effort. But I think it is possible for good things to have things that don't quite work, if not objectively then at least from a subjective approach. And this scene is a No Thank you for me.

Oh and I cannot suggest it enough: read different comics from different cultures or foundational schools as much as possible. Embrace the beautiful diversity of a world of different ways to do the thing! There are *thousands* of different, brilliant executions.

But that? That is all I can think of right now. I need to work and I need my coffee.

These are things that would, as comic panels, work. Animated, it's a slideshow with dubbing and sound effects.

The reverse can be true. A collection of sequential images does not a comic make.

When you work on a medium, be it comics or animation or photography, the best results are those that use that medium to the maximum.

Animation is considered subpar when you just have comic panels with voice acting. And again I hate to say it, but:

Some conversations can flow swiftly. Some conversations can be slow and tense. It is possible for characters to react inadequately, but if so, it has to have a reason-- and I think that's it: is there an in-universe reasoning for the pace you see on the page? Are the choices being made mindful?

You begin to have a moment of simmering, slow anger but then the candlemaker cuts the tension with "you might want to cover your ears for this" and MIDWAY his joke La Muerte is already screaming.

THIS, I like to think, I work to avoid in a comic.

In a hurry to speed the plot along, and stack as many jokes for the kids as possible, I suppose, there are NO pauses here. La Muerte is told Xibalba cheated and she IMMEDIATELY goes "he did what", no pause for shock, or disbelief. the pause comes off-- later:

I hate to use another creation as a negative point of reference [and I must point out I fully respect the love and craft that went into this movie] but whenever I think of the "Don's" for my creative style, I think of this scene from Book of Life.

I am a big fan of pauses, for drama, for tension. I haven't had the chance to do it a lot in the pages of SMQ So far, but I think some moments in comic narrative *only* work if you allow them to settle, to sink in.

Now, the MOST personal tip I can give is that, in comics, you need to mind your timing: comic panels convey an action, but also convey *time*. And not everything should be happening, all at once.
