We also had an extraordinary session on phage-driven coevolutionary dynamics. Talks by @fredoleroux.bsky.social and her incredible datasets on vibrio phages, phage-plasmids, phage satellites and even phage-plasmid satellites & @clara-inrae.bsky.social on the phageome of apricot trees

Together, we show how #evolutionary history and #ecological ubiquity, more than #local-adaptation, shape phages–bacteria networks in plant-associated environments. 🌱🦠🧬

Both #defence-systems and #prophages contributed to phage resistance.
For one bacterial phylogroup, strains with more defence systems were infected by fewer phages.
Prophages didn’t strictly block infection but seemed to modulate phage efficacy in complex ways.

Both bacterial phylogeny and phage taxonomy influenced the structure of the phage–bacteria interaction network, alongside the observed nestedness.

We tested 23 #phages from diseased #apricot trees against 44 #𝑃𝑠𝑒𝑢𝑑𝑜𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑒 strains from diseased plants, healthy plants, and nearby habitats. Instead of local adaptation, we found a strongly nested network, reflecting the broad ecological range of 𝑃. 𝑠𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑒.
