WOCU fights for fair access, fair treatment & fair pay for WOC in the entertainment industry. It helped me get mentorships and facetime with pro TV writers at a time when I had no access and didn't know where to start. youtu.be/O7J-gtPs_fY

I highly, highly recommend this book to all lovers of historical fiction, magical realism, East Asian history, and family sagas. And I look forward to much more stellar writing from Jiyoung Han!

It's not a light book. CWs include rape, child murder & graphic workplace abuse. But all of it is starkly real and a necessary jolt to the heart—a rich gift in the form of a legacy of inherited pain, alongside unexpected grace: folkloric magic, much-needed friendship, unexpected rebellion.

Every character is rich and complicated, every detail sharp and provocative. The world will draw you in and make you feel like you really were there in the 20th century, right along with the deeply realized protagonists.

Tbh what Jiyoung Han has done here is nothing short of a multi-generational feminist epic, from the tragic parents whose deaths predate the worst that Japanese colonization will bring to Korea, throughout their children's and grandchildren's experiences in wartime and after.

I did Orpheus from Hadestown and my partner did Eurydice last year. I had my violin in place of his guitar.
