WHAT IS THE ARGUMENT FOR EXAMS

I have the benefit of an academic family and a base level of intelligence. But I've still struggled with formal academic measurements despite my genuine engagement and interest in the subjects.

The system already doesn't work for some people. But now it will work for even less.

I can tell you all about the humanist ideology and movement of the Renaissance and how that's exhibited in the art work of the time, but I can't tell you the specific date of Caravaggio's entombment of christ.

Dates and names are not actually important. Anyone referencing anything in real life will have access to this data.
Let me focus on studying the IDEAS and RELEVANCE rather than fucking dates.

I was the nerd that loved talking in tutorials because I think discussion is the best education. And being able to discuss is an important metric.

My 1st year art history exam gave us 60 art works and said we'd have to be able to write about 3 of whichever whichever 6 were chosen for the exam. Which was only part 1 of the exam.

Even at uni, my assignments got good marks and my exams brought down my mark for each paper.

Exams are a stupid concept, at least if they're closed book.

I can show that I know the subject and have ideas, but I can't remember dates and stats and names off the bat.
