Never said it couldn't! I'm speaking solely of the fact that games writing often gets called "good" even by those who are supposed to critique it when it would barely pass a beginner creative writing class.

Like just to be pedantically specific, I've seen a galling number of critics (CRITICS!) call SHf's writing "good" and praise its story, despite the fact that it breaks Writing 101's "Show, Don't Tell" rule, where every character just outright states their feelings and motivations, lol.

True! One of my all time faves does just that (999!) and I love it.

I appreciate that games are a media that appeal to people who might not have the time/energy for reading novels, but I do feel like it's easy to tell when someone who doesn't read outside of games says a game's writing is "good."

It's a little like being mad that your favorite theme park doesn't have food that compares to an award winning restaurant lmao, like obviously food is a part of the park experience but you're there for more than just that. And I say that as a narrative-focused gamer!

to do that, and worse, the state of social media has enabled a climate where people tie their morality to the type of media they consume. Tropes as a substitute for discussion are for sure annoying, but in the way a check engine light is annoying. (IMO ofc)

i think it's more a broader lack of education that's done that. The over reliance on tropes in dialogues about literature is a symptom, not the disease. We live in an era where people are allergic to media criticism and deeper examinings of their own biases bc they aren't armed w/ the knowledge

Being "developed as a product" is more relevant a statement than ever w/regards to modern AAA. Not less relevant, not equally relevant, more.

Considering the state of game dev + economy I don't see the issue in saying "hey there are quality AAAs from the past to play, here are a couple I like."

personally i just played Human Revolution for the first time w/no other experience w/Deus Ex and it's easily one of my favorite games now! also i think it's kind of lame to dismiss someone's opinion on a game as "just nostalgia" tbh

Defamation in US law is very specific & very hard to prove against celebrities/public figures. Like in order for it to be defamation it has to be presented as fact, with malice, by the would-be defamer and *also* provably false, and ALSO must have actually impacted the plaintiff’s reputation.

The dub is also (from what I’ve heard) hammy to an atrocious degree.

The writing in JP is apparently quite old fashioned and flowery so I understand Alex O Smith’s intentions with the WotL loc, but it def takes away some of the basic readability
