Room with expanse of tan carpet (with random items on the right side that are not relevant to this painful attempt at a joke). There are two strips—or slits—of sunlight coming through windows outside of the frame. The slits are approximately 6 inches wide and a yard long, and are side-by-side lengthwise from the camera. The sun only shines through these windows in the fall when the sun is lower. My fluffy orange and white kitty basks in the sunlight of the top slit. (Her image is blown out because she’s so much brighter than the rest of the scene but I don’t have the photo software to fix it). “Double-slit experiment” is a physics thing.😹 It proves that things are changed merely from being looked at.

Dear summer,

FUCK OFF.
Current weather in Austin, Texas. The current temperature is 85°F, down from a high of 94°F, with a “feels like” temperature of 87°F. Allegedly, it’s supposed to get down to 66°F tonight, but I don’t believe it. Forecast for Austin, Texas. All but one of the highs is above 80°F. There is almost no rain in the forecast. Thankfully most of the lows are forecast to be under 70°F. Small comfort. It’s fucking OCTOBER.

A huge gorgeous Belgian draft horse, Pesto, in the barn she rules over. She’s a reddish lightish brown with a long blonde mane. A white lady is petting her, but Pesto is more interested in cookies. The lady is 5’5” but her head doesn’t even reach Pesto’s back.

The sheet is is a lovely “Carolina” blue (Pantone 297-C, more or less), gazing pensively out the window. The light coming in is so bright that the irises of her golden eyes are slits. Her little paws, which are orange with white toes, are crossed daintily in front of her, draped across the end of the bed. She is lying on the fitted sheet because she was helping me make the bed. I guess she decided that the rest of the covers could fuck off. My fluffy orange and white kitty, Annabelle, lying on the back of a pale blue couch. Her right front leg is dangling down the (stage-)right of the cushion, while the other hangs off the other side. She looks slightly crazed, which she probably was, perhaps chasing an invisible foe. My fluffy orange and white kitty, Annabelle, lying on her back on a cardboard box that has seen better days. The box is in front of a French door, and there is random stuff around the scene that she is 100% responsible for. Her pose is inexplicable: her tummy is horizontal, and one back foot is curled like a little fist, the other sort of lolling to the side. Her head is sideways, twisting to the right, and her front paws are stretched out in a couple of directions that seem unrelated to the rest of her body. She does not look like a cat, but rather some misassembled creature whose species is a mystery. Perhaps she is a Flerken.

Here’s Annabelle enjoying the afghan my grandmother made for teenage Chicken during my green-and-yellow phase. Annabelle’s little paws kill me; it’s hard to tell here how adorably they’re curled around the fold of the afghan.

Floofy orange-and-white kitty, Annabelle. She is a pretty pretty princess. She is lying across a folded green-and-yellow crocheted afghan, a gift from my grandmother (who also taught baby Chicken to crochet), her little white paws peeking out from under her white chest hair. She’s looking up at god-knows-what (“cats can see things we can’t”) with her clear golden eye. The afghan is atop a bedspread with a boho-type print in muted blues, greens, turquoises, and a little yellow. The afghan doesn’t “match” as it’s much brighter yellow and green, but it still goes. And it makes me really happy. Even happier to see how much Annabelle loves it. Her great-grandmother would love that.

I can’t believe we’re living in this timeline. I keep reminding myself that this is MY country and it deserves fighting for. Cold, dead hands and all that. Based on demographics, I should be “safe” from the bad guys. But not anymore. I’m scared and so very tired.

Happy Gotcha Day to my sweet goofball and love of my life, Annabelle! She showed up at my house 8 years ago today. I didn’t want a cat. But she was tiny and sick and obviously needed me to take care of her. I didn’t know it yet, but I needed her to take care of me too. (Yes I know I’m being cheesy!)

A sploot means she’s facing away from you, her legs stretched out behind her. Annabelle, my fluffy orange and white long-haired kitty, when she was about 3. She’s lying on her back and looking at you. One front paw is stretched out in front of her, her white toes spread. Her other front paw is curled over her chest. Somehow her back legs are twisted around so that her butt end and her front end look like they’re pointed in opposite directions.
