La Buitrera was among the most amazing places I've ever had the chance to work, both geologically and in terms of sheer beauty, and I really tried to channel how it felt to be there into the final piece. I can't thank everyone I met there enough for having me on to help and for showing me the ropes!

These tracks appear in interdunal river deposits in the Kokorkom paleoerg (a dune sea spanning 826 km^2) and can be beautifully preserved, including skin impressions! While these prints were made in relatively wet conditions, I depicted a transient sauropod herd during dry times in the final piece.

While the La Buitrera Paleontological Area, where we were working, is known primarily for its extraordinary preservation of small animals in a large dune sea, I also had the chance to see some amazingly preserved sauropod footprints that Apesteguía et al. described in 2023.

Ooh this is awesome!! Love the algal staining!

Thank you so much, I’m really glad you enjoyed! I’m hoping the research ends up being really useful for folks examining the taphonomy of fluvial sites!

After some looking, it looks like there are mass wasting deposits from around the overall arc of volcanics that includes Pilot Knob! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I know that before a lot of it was built over, a variety of deposits were found on Pilot Knob. There are beach sand deposits, reef deposits, and obviously lavas. I don’t know how much of the flanks were eroded, but the hill is the highest structure in the area by a good margin.

Unfortunately, the volcano itself is mostly built over by residential areas or on private property, so it’s difficult to explore the hill that remains of Pilot Knob. But, only a few miles away at Mckinney Falls State Park, the falls are formed by more erodible ash beds undercutting limestones.

Pilot Knob Volcano is a fascinating geological feature that few in Austin know about. It was part of a chain of volcanos that stretched across Texas during the Late Cretaceous. Many were submarine during their early eruptions, but here I chose to represent it as more established later in its life.

Awesome to see more photos of this site! This is the one in the Entrada Sandstone that has some of the earliest evidence of proper sauropods in North America, right?
