Flexing my geekiness in naming our new vineyard in Martinborough, in the Wairarapa on the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Wairarapa means glistening water in Te Reo Maori.

The name is Shalāsin ชลาสินธุ์, a Thai portmanteau of two Sanskrit words: Jala (water) & Sindhu (river or flowing water.)

Grabbing potatoes at the farmers market this morning.

Him: How do you make your potato gratin?

Me: So you make a layer of super thinly sliced potatoes. And you drown it in cream. Another layer of potatoes, and drown it in cream. Then more potatoes and you drown it some more in cream. And so on.

Casual, Michelin-starred Kin Khao always be doin' Thai right. Returning this week for the likes of juicy laab tod (pork meatballs) and that killer fried chicken sandwich on Acme pan de mie bread.

Meanwhile in #ThaiElection2023, the landslide of over 14 millions Thais who voted for change--actually over 24m if you include the votes for the 2nd place winner, also an opposition party--is facing a threat of being throttled by 250 junta-appointed senators in the Upper House.

Do you know what this is?

This lunch is a very old Thai classic, ขนมจีนซาวน้ำ Kanom Jin Sao Nam, fermented rice noodle tossed with freshly pressed coconut milk and a variety of sweet fruits, tart leaves, pungent alliums, & white turmeric. Served with grilled fish dumplings in turmeric-scented coconut milk.

Maybe I’ll just post what I have for lunch every day while I’m here in Bangkok. This is ปลาดุกผัดฉ่า stir fried catfish in spicy chili paste and wild ginger. A simple market lunch but so damned good.
