Oh god... this, so much this. I have play tested a game where I had to ask 10 minutes in - just what is the solution? I'm not vested enough in the game for this already...

I can't think of a major release I've played recently that felt like too much handle holding but lots of smaller games where I am completely at a loss.

We can say this but... I play a bunch of unreleased indie story games and for the life of me I can't get the need to make it so people will never see a large part of your story.

There is a balance there when you want more than a walking simulator, but I think this is somewhat survivor bias.
