On Aug. 16, 1896, four individuals were stopped along Rabbit Creek in northern Canada. In the water, one of them saw something that changed Canada forever: gold.
That discovery sparked the Klondike Gold Rush.

On this day in 1930, the first British Empire Games (now the Commonwealth Games) were held in Hamilton, Ontario.
The Games featured 11 nations and 400 athletes competing in 59 events. Canada finished second behind England with 54 medals.
