Sweat formed along his brow, the harshness of sunlight and the heat absorbed through tinted windows coupling with the conflict of unstable emotion. His palm met soft cotton, his worn and bloody linens replaced by Kabal’s old New York State t-shirt. Bright eyes never seemed to leave her father’s face, studying the features that matched a voice she knew well. Little yawns and heavy eyelids fighting hard the tired that came alongside a loud and bright arrival. The setting sun was all that illuminated through the room now, lamps since dimmed. The only sounds ringing down the hall now were shuffling feet and hushed, anxious voices. All of those awaiting word — besides Kabal — unaware what to make of it all with a lack of status report. Moments of privacy that made the chaos outside melt away, made up for in the form of warm snuggles. Whoever Shao Kahn sent after them, they’d since retreated, leaving more than a mess outside the bedroom door that would be dealt with later. Only, for now…

The Gunslinger was left alone again with his thoughts. His own thoughts. Left in the scary silence and stillness of the base. No movement other than Kabal, no words. Only the tense conversation that took place a room away, what he couldn’t hear only added to the inner turmoil. “Hope this is alright… I’ve gotta get across the hall and drag all that stuff back,” Kabal began again, bottles of juice and water respectively in one hand. An array of options for snacks in the other. Granola bars with chocolate and cherry and a sleeve of plain crackers that made deja vu rush in… Another life perhaps, another where he was at Kano’s mercy instead of Kabal’s kindness.

She moved slowly around the bed, completing the half circle pace over and over in his absence, taking her mind away from the sensation. Her hand grazed along the disheveled sheets and quilts, humming a long forgotten song under her breath. “Yer supposed to be laying down,” the arms dealer said gruffly, her concentration broken with a furrowed brow, “Kabal said to rest, not to wander like a wounded animal… You’ll wear yourself out.”

The man accompanying the General kept his head down, the make up of his clothing fitting strange like a costume on his stiff form. Jade recognized the outfit from the Gunslinger in the Kolesium, only now did she get an up close view of him. Long curls tucked under his hat, a blaring red device on the leather strap that clung tight over his chest, desert goggles staring back from his hat’s brim rather than his eyes. A mask now hid the blank expression he wore, unable to see the wry smirk that formed on her lips.
