But Watson became world famous, not because of the quality of his work per se, but because he was the first to grasp the answer and the answer was so beautiful and full of implications.

Aaron Klug, a leading crystallographer and a close colleague of Franklin’s working on the structures of viruses, believed that she would have discovered it, but more slowly because she was a careful and methodical scientist as opposed to Watson’s undisciplined rush to the answer.

He is focused on winning the race to the structure rather than finding out what the structure is. He objectifies women and treats them quite disrespectfully. He is quick to point out the flaws of many of his colleagues.

He may not have fully understood this, but Crick did because of his work on helical diffraction. The question of where the bases were remained. According to The Double Helix, Watson was focused on this and eventually figured out the A-T and G-C pairing that proved so important.

Watson was an opportunist. He took advantage of Crick’s command of crystallography and managed to get access to Franklin’s experimental data including the famous Photography 51 which reveal a simple cross-like diffraction pattern of DNA in high humidity.
