As AI expands the search space and eases knowledge production, human scientists will increasingly act as selectors and evaluators, deciding what to pursue and ensuring rigor and accountability. Supporting these roles is critical for genuine progress.

It’s also a resource allocation problem: deciding what matters, which hypotheses to test, and which results to trust.

Automation can produce knowledge, but meaning comes from human judgment.

We will all be better off in a world with fewer papers. However, that is not the current system. In many ways, I do not blame LLMs for hallucinations. Producing high-quality information is genuinely hard.
