Marsh and maritime forest — Hunting Island, SC. Weekend wanderings with my best bud ❤️
November 17, 2025 at 1:25 AM
It’s not Halloween until I make a slew of over-the-top themed snacks 😈 This year: popcorn balls, brownie witch’s cauldrons, stuffed mushroom eyeballs. Bonus super-creepy lychee eyeball cocktail made by a friend!

Also learned this wild story from the Boyton book: In 1976, The Washington Post literally sent a reporter on an apparently very expensive Snallygaster (inexplicably rebranded as a kind of Bigfoot?) hunt with a whole team of assistants.

Returning today from a highly educational weekend roadtrip with this tidbit: Stopped over in Harpers Ferry for a night, had dinner at a place called Snallygaster’s, inquired about the logo, learned about the local legend—a giant man-eating bird-dragon originating in nearby Frederick County, MD. 1/

Long week, weather finally turning, rare Friday night in — yup, it’s giant-batch-of-homemade-Charleston-red-rice night

It hath been a week. Here is a small joy: Every October, my grandmother’s (small, adorable, usually understated) retirement home sticks this GIGANTIC inflatable cat in the lobby & it just tickles me to death. It is 2 stories tall! Its head swivels!! The skeleton rat is new this year & I am obsessed.

Spotted on the map tonight while planning an upcoming road trip. Literally can’t believe that I (a Halloween queen if there ever was one) did not know about this community in my home state. 🎃

Blazing sunset on the walk to Forest Hills stadium to see Tyler Childers tonight (what a heckuva show). Put a lil lump right into my throat, y’all. We live on a beautiful planet and we still have music. ❤️

Tonight’s project — not a fish mimic, but still a fun addition to the thread. Lions mane mushroom “pulled pork” with homemade Carolina gold barbecue sauce (mustard-based!) and homemade pickles. 😋

Lots of other fascinating stuff in here about how old John Brown’s brand of religion influenced his worldview and moral convictions (eg extreme generosity, contempt of capitalism, withdrawal from political life and organized church life). A riveting read truly (so far) for the modern age

I have a deathly allergy to fire ants and growing up in the Carolinas I had to be super careful outdoors, never barefoot in the dirt, always sturdy shoes and a blanket in the park. Been in NYC 12 years now (where we have no fire ants) and it still feels so cool to me to literally touch grass. 🥹

Well I went back today and bought some ☠️ Honestly delicious
August 9, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Left: chickpea/artichoke “crab” cakes (I’ve been told to try this with lions mane mushrooms next)
Right: chickpea “tuna” salad, basically my go-to lunch these days
August 6, 2025 at 3:46 AM
Carrot “smoked salmon,” also a really successful mimic 😃
August 6, 2025 at 3:43 AM
Watermelon poke — this literally just came out of the oven and has absolutely no business being these delicious. First time I’ve ever made this and obsessed.
August 6, 2025 at 3:41 AM
I have had, as they say, a day — so no news, just a self-indulgent thread of weird stuff I’ve been stress-cooking. Normally a limited pescatarian, but leaning very veg atm, so the oddball theme is veg versions of fish dishes 🤷‍♀️

King oyster mushroom “scallops” over lemon pasta, these were phenomenal

~Three years ago, on a mission for apple cider doughnuts (yep), I found myself forking over like $25 for this candle after the vendor informed me that its eyes would light up when I lit it 💀 I burned it one time, immediately got sad when it started to melt, and now it just sits on my tv stand

I say this over and over, but the contraction of conventional newsrooms deeply erodes our ability to hold power to account — in all the obvious ways and in many less obvious ones as well. Great point in this piece on the Post’s obit desk:

Almost forgot to celebrate little Velvet’s gotcha day, which was earlier this week. 🎉 My two lil pandemic babies, both acquired more or less accidentally under strange, difficult circumstances — funny how some of life’s blessings work that way.

Thanks for saving me in so many ways during the pandemic and ever since, bud. You are still the meanest and most deceptively cute little fuzzball on Earth.

I met this ornery little bastard five years ago today and he promptly bit my hand when I tried to pet him. Within a few days, we were best buds forever. :) I love this photo — it captures the first time Lucky hopped on the couch and put his head on my knee, the literal moment we became friends.

Strange feeling to visit the same place years apart in v different phases of your life. New River Gorge WV—top pic taken Nov. 7, 2020, mid-pandemic, the day Biden’s election win was called. Bottom pics taken last weekend—very different circumstances for me personally, for the country, for the world.

Tonight’s sunset. I never love this city more than I do on mid-summer nights. ❤️

Back in the Mountain State on this West Virginia Day — celebrating the great Appalachian glass-blowing tradition with a tour of Blenko Glass Company, been wanting to visit this place for years ❤️
