Historical figure of the week: Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204). A wealthy heiress, Eleanor was married to Louis VII of France. However the marriage was annulled when Eleanor failed to give Louis male heirs, so she married the future Henry II of England (with whom she had 5 sons).

Historical figure of the week: Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1858-1934). Emma married King William III of the Netherlands who was 40 years her senior. She was Queen regent in the 1890s on behalf of her young daughter Queen Wilhelmina, and was said to be ‘efficient’ in her role.

Historical figure of the week: Elizabeth of Russia (1709-1762). An empress of Russia in her own right, she is credited as bringing an Age of Enlightenment to the country. She did not execute anyone in her 20 year reign, and was technically the last Romanov to rule Russia.

Historical figure of the week: Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821). Her marriage to her cousin George IV was disastrous and he famously barred her from his coronation. George also neglected to tell her when their daughter Charlotte’s died in 1817. Caroline’s popularity prevented him divorcing her.

Historical figure of the week: Prince John of the United Kingdom (1905-1919). The son of George V, John suffered from severe epilepsy and likely was autistic. He died at the age of 13, following a seizure. Contrary to popular belief he was not completely shut away by his family and was well-loved.

Historical figure of the week: Archduchess Mathilda of Austria (1849-1867). She died at the age of 18 after the cigarette she was hiding from her father lit her dress aflame, causing her to suffer horrific burns. If she had lived she would have married King Umberto I of Italy.

Historical figure of the week: Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1772-1822). He was the grandfather of Prince Albert. He liked to dress in feminine clothing and was known to friends as Emilie. He also authored literary works involving homosexual couples.

First read of the year done! I really enjoyed Ali Hazelwood’s Bride. I’m not going to do a review but I will say that I might check out her other books, and just get into more romance stuff in general!
