Pulmonary function test's probably the hardest thing I've ever done but the path to a long COVID diagnosis has started. I'm so fuckin tired, man. I make jokes but I'm so so tired.

Two recent workshop pieces I've been working on for a few weeks
Sometimes, the phoenix comes back with extra wings, or a beak evolved to catch different kinds of prey. No matter how long I watch it, after the embers have cooled into a nest, it tries to fly again, despite these new abstractions. An interrupted pattern a foggy muscle memory an plea to move like it always had. Sometimes it dies in the attempt. Sometimes its feathers shine green or blue when it rises again. Sometimes, the phoenix comes back with baby’s hands for talons, or a tail so long, you could write on its feathers every single adaptation it didn’t bring back from the grave. A treasure trove of carbon waits for you in the iron grip of a summer night. Until now the hands were yours, until now they held you like the sky holds clouds, together with the oasis of a solid edge. Now they turn your pliant space and invite you to sensation. You still know. That can’t be taken. The knowledge is your image, making yourself even as you bargain with the air you shove aside. Call it Grace. Call it Anachronism. All the world’s billions and billions of years came to a head and called itself Child, like a rainbow’s waves being bent to clear light. But you still had to learn the safe ways to let all the red inside you out.

Blank verse practice from last week
The first breath of the cold is a relief, a wake-up call for all the parts of me that haven't shucked their heavy blankets yet. The furnace stokes itself these recent years, or at the very least, the tongues of flame know when to still their preaching, let the coals inch closer, make more shadows in their light. It all continues burning, even with a congregation that it must consume. Eventually (though likely sooner now), that great hot maw will need a hearty meal, will need a body with its spark skin close to toss in something strong and porous, then retreat because the danger draws too near. I give it extra air, that much is true, but after long enough a vacuum forms and pulls the edges of me tighter in. Controlled environments I've got in spades, but I am not one – luckily, the rest know where to find me when they need some heat.

The issue is designed to look like a file folder with tabs stuck into it in the colors of the progress flag. Genderative Exercise We're not quite sure yet if you can catch my gender. A rite of unbound flourishing - that’s my gender. Find me in your kitchen, leaning into the steam, troubling up a witch-worthy batch of my gender. Breath-tall levees of your discarded books, in front of the incubators where I hatch my gender. When you find the old one dusty, can I teach you how to use this new safety latch for my gender? Put all your spared hopes into the spare change in your pockets. Are you going to scratch off my gender? Every cell phone in the city rings out at once, all dialing themselves to dispatch my gender. Draw the lines thick and close, diegetic shadows escaping in the gutters. Crosshatch my gender. Conveniently forget to update the software when the devs say they found a patch for my gender. You’re welcome back in my ring, friend. I like a scrap – If you've got the moxie, come rematch my gender.

QTE Poem The danger takes a moment then it takes your beating heart, slides its fingers through the arteries and rips the thing apart, then it tells you that it knows you with a voice you’ve only heard on the days you’ve woken up and found yourself to be interred. In the cemetery soil, where embalming fluids seep, it’s possible to get out scarred no more than just skin-deep but it isn’t very likely when the danger’s made its mark, and you wince too hard to notice all the movement in the dark.

New workshop piece from last night's class with @sadqueer4life.bsky.social & @eileendotnet.bsky.social!
Your whole life turns to sky and you buy a single plastic bird to fill it. A kingfisher, a missile, an anchor dropped, a thing more defined by what it does when it leaves the air, how the bodies around it react before physics re-establishes its boundaries. You opened it in pieces – clear bags of body parts in hands still hooked to machines in hands that needed something other than themselves to put together. This was obvious. Once the body was done, the water was sculpted into its splash, once the first wing was finished and the second had mostly connected its tissue, you notice that the colors have stopped matching. One little piece, missing from the operating theater, and enough to fill the gap, but obviously, clumsily, and in a way that, in the end, won’t change how it works at all.
