To find one of her most audacious acts, one must carefully examine the 1740 painting of Chawton House by Mellichamp, which today hangs in our tapestry room. In the lower right corner, one can make out a faint inscription: ‘Mary Jane Austen 1819’.

She is most famous for her novel Jane Eyre, which she published in 1847 under the male pseudonym Currer Bell. The novel tells the story of an independent young governess who faces numerous challenges while staying true to her values.
