(ALSO do yourself a favor and make sure to get a photoelectric one, and not an ionization one. Way fewer false alarms, and better at detecting smoldering fires which is how most fire-related deaths occur)

well you see, many new smoke alarms have permanent 10-yr batteries, so the solution is to replace it. Your landlord should handle this for you, or offer reimbursement if you do it yourself. Grab the part number from the back, put it back in the freezer, and order one. Should be an easy swap!

To pre-answer the "why are you leaving" crowd, I loved my time at Vox -- yes, even the hard times -- and I love working with the team(s) I leave behind, notably @theverge.com, but after some months of reflection I decided that I didn't belong at a Vox Media without Polygon.
