After arriving I was ushered into a large room, where I sat in the front row with a nameplate that just said "Charles." This is the face of someone who truly has no idea what's going on. The only person with less of a clue than me was the "translator" in my headset.

On the day I moved to Shenzhen 12 years ago, I went to a 'meeting' that was actually an enormous press conference.
The surreal mix of absurdity and ceremony was perfect foreshadowing for my year in Shenzhen.
