Paul Nash belonged to the very diverse generation of British modern artists who went to the Slade and included Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson, and Dora Carrington. 'Wood on the Downs,' (c1929) features Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire; a gratifying picture of Englishness.

Elizabeth Strout has the abiltiy to take the joys and sorrows of very ordinary people and show that no one is ordinary. I recommend allof her books.I would read all the Devon bus timetables if she had written them. Lucy by the Sea is set during covid and is evocative of that strange time. Read her!

Harvesting in the rain this morning: Runner beans, courgette, cucumbers, chard, cavalo nero, salad and the first tromboncino summer squash. Look like a good year for squashes so I'm harvesting small - this one was approx .4kg. #squash #allotmentlife #garden #vegetables

A bit cooler this morning with a nice breeze as I planted out follow-on lettuces and replaced my previous tomatoes which succumbed to insufficient little nutrient uptake because they were too dry. Tese are also Tumbling Tom, one red and one yellow.
