mostly interviewing kids and elders, so yeah, I’m earnest.
contributing writer at nyt magazine, also making stuff elsewhere
www.charleylocke.com
Cool perk of my beat though is that today I won bingo at senior housing
every time I forget how weird reporting trips are… traveling to go be as extroverted and emotionally engaged with strangers as possible, and in the off-time I’m like scarfing down a weird sandwich in a rental car and wandering around an anodyne/interchangeable motel room

I’m in line at jiffy lube and the teens sitting on a nearby bench are talking about how much they love the paris review. magazine culture is alive and well, folks, and it’s getting an oil change in portland.

The Tweens Down Under: Life Without Social Media in Australia
As Australia rolls out a ban on social media for kids under 16, tech companies face steep fines and teens face life without TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms. Will it work?

looking to feel old? one of my teen mentees just told me about her "2014 Tumblr playlist," which she listens to as she pretends to be experiencing what it was like to be a teenager "back in those times"

two teens just told me that after seeing a story I wrote in a print nyt magazine, they now think I'm "so famous and so real." print as clout: not dead!!!

all this talk about the “golden age” of magazines… I would just like to say that, I, too, experienced it (wore pencil skirts to my vanity fair internship in summer 2012, where I fetched graydon carter’s lunch from hale & hearty and delivered packages to writers’ brownstones in the west village)

had a dream last night that I was on a flight with zohran and he traded for a middle seat so that a mom and a little kid could sit together. just the kind of good guy he is

there's so much pontificating from experts about how teens don't date or hook up anymore. so I talked to the *actual* experts on being a teenager today (teenagers themselves)

Is young love really dead?
Teenagers today are maligned for being anti-romance. What’s really going on?

remember: if a source refuses to answer your questions, it could be because they don't trust you. but if they're in middle school, it also could be because *checks notes* they're mad at their mom and you were on speakerphone.

love to get punked by a source (called a teen and got his voicemail, which was one of those "hi! ... hello??? ... can you hear me???" recordings. teen boys, making me stammer confusedly from 2002 to infinity)

So many of us feel helpless about how to change enormous injustices. Jennifer rolled up her sleeves and just started doing it.

Glad to get to write about a “global changemaker” who is, first and foremost, meeting the needs of her community, who leads by listening and taking action.

At COP, Jennifer Uchendu found that global leaders weren’t interested in the urgent perspectives of young Africans. So she created the space she needed, where African youth can talk about the intersecting experiences of climate catastrophe.

great way to force yourself to follow this rule is to write for kid readers. I am constantly asking experts questions like "but how come a bike stays upright?" "what about farts are stinky?" "does it actually matter if I brush my teeth?"

always pretend you're writing for a curious 10-year-old!
this is directly related to my most important journalism (which i struggle mightily to follow myself) which is: questions that might make you aopear dumb to the interviewee are usually some of the best questions

Megan, who is so powerful that legions of teens adore her *even after* she took away their phones, has written a brilliant book that urgently clarifies how private equity ruins specific, actual lives. I plan on handing out copies on wall street next time I'm in nyc, lmk if you want to join
I am extremely freaking thrilled to announce that Bad Company is *officially* available for preorder wherever you buy books. (I am linking to Bookshop but buy it wherever!) I worked so, so hard on this book, and it would mean a ton to me if you ordered it. bookshop.org/a/109816/978...
