Yeah but I can't see shit so I either have to jack the gamma on my TV set or suffer. It's so annoying.

I respect Dogme95 as an aesthetic choice even if I don't agree w/all the results. And there's certainly directors & DPs who understand when it REALLY need to be dark (Carpenter/Cundey, Coppola/Storaro, Mann/Spinotti, Schoenbrun/Yue). But there's no thought behind the way a lot of stuff is shot now

Would they rather I look at my phone when I'm in public? Wtf are people whining about - I thought a few years ago people were crying about how no one reads anymore? Well now that I'm reading it's like "no, not like that!"

If practicality was a real concern we'd be better off driving Kei trucks. I don't need a ladder just to reach the bed.

Fantastic film. Also what a great eye for camera movement, doing scenes in single takes in a way that doesn't feel pretentious...

I should also add Killer of Sheep (1977, Charles Burnett). A poetic slice of Black working class life in Watts. The adults deal with their jobs, home repairs, raising kids, helping out cousins and friends, while the children still play and dream. Beautifully shot.

Sanitarium Under the Sign of the Hour Glass, by the Brothers Quay. A mesmerizing blend of puppet animation and live action. I'm not even sure I can describe the plot but it's based on a Bruno Schulz novella and it just experiments with time and repetition in really neat ways.

Working on film sets, the biggest PITA was/is printing out call sheets, production reports, and all the other paperwork - this would've been amazing to have

Purple Rain is a rambling mess of a movie but that's part of what makes it great. It's a vehicle for getting from musical number to musical number. It's not faux serious like today's rote, save the cat, joyless musical biopics. If you can get on its wavelength it's a fun time.
