Yeah, that sounds like he should be receiving either home health care or assisted living placement, both things that would meet his needs in a way that doesn't limit your ability to live your life freely. He doesn't get to "give up" and decide that you should just care for him forever.

It's not your job to live unhappily for the rest of your life just so that his needs are met. You aren't his mother. There are services that can provide the support he needs, but he's expecting you to do it for free and at the expense of your time on this earth. Don't let him.

And if you leave and he is really straight up failing to care for himself and survive- you can always call your local adult protective services line and let them know to reach out to him to offer support. Even if he cannot survive without your help, it is not your responsibility to help him.

In my experience with people who refuse all help with getting better- as soon as you leave, they can suddenly help themselves. They suddenly become capable of surviving despite their seeming complete inability to do so without you before. You're not responsible for him, not morally or legally.
