At the July 19 SBEC meeting, there were over 50 disciplinary cases of this sort. bit.ly/SBEC_7-19-24. What does it mean to suspend a teacher's certificate when teachers do not need certificates to teach?

Just in time for Texas to adopt a central role in the national attempt to bring semiconductor manufacturing back home. How exactly are we planning to obtain the technicians and engineers to pull this off amid plunging availability of foundational courses in Texas high schools? From out of state?

But it had already been undone. HB5 of 2013 canceled the 4x4 and made physics opt-in again. The results started to become visible only in 2018 and a decline in physics-taking continues.

At this point Texas was far ahead of any other state in the percentage of students taking physics:

It took four years for these students to graduate. Among the STEM disciplines the main effect was on Physics, where course-taking started to rise in 2011.

But it took until 2013 for the results of schools staffing up to provide physics to become visible.

HB1 of the third session of the 76th legislature in 2006 made a 4x4 curriculum the recommended plan for Texas high school students entering 9th grade in 2007. This means they were supposed to take four years each of English, Math, Social Studies, and Science.

The 4x4 graduation plan made 4 years each of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies the default for high school students starting 2006. The results started showing up when they graduated in 2010.

The big story in this data release, however, was the continued growth in the number of uncertified teachers.

Finally note that there are two tabs in the Tableau story, and the second one lets you see how the Texas charter schools have been doing in relation in relation to college readiness.

Note the huge change in "College Readiness" in 2018 when the SAT changed its scoring method.

Note that on the Tableau Public sheet you can mouse over disks and the school name pops up.

The correlation between poverty concentration and college readiness is really striking. The fact that minority percentage, indicated by the change in color from blue to orange, rises in concert with poverty is also striking
December 6, 2024 at 1:37 PM
This college readiness criterion is complicated, but you can think of it as "I want to keep my options open to go to college out of state"
