After 10 days there, she escaped and exposed the cruel treatment of its inmates. In other pursuits, she jumped off ferry boats to test the readiness of rescue teams (they didn't do very well, but she survived), and she posed as a young immigrant to expose fraudulent employment agencies.” — Baldasty

I began reading one volume of a collection of his essays and other writings the other day, after only reading Homage to Catalonia and Animal Farm, and am quite impressed. Orwell can write!
I’m jotting down turns of phrase and sentences of note as I read.

Used bookstores in college towns are invariably better than used bookstores in cities without a large university.

(Sagely) Joan Robinson talked about this.
“Every demand depends upon every other price. If the mat makers are exceptionally heavy drinkers, the demand for liquor will be high on the days when they have been lucky.”

People frequently ignore Madison’s comments on the tenure of the comptroller, which imply Congress could determine the tenure of certain officers. “There may be strong reasons why an officer of this kind should not hold his office at the pleasure of the executive branch of the Government.”

So a monopoly that wants to sell a specific quantity can change the price s.t. utility maximizing consumers then decide to purchase that chosen quantity. No ideas about bargaining power necessary really!
And here’s a relevant footnote from the micro book we use at UMass btw that may be of interest.

That's not how I read Marshall's exposition of the law of demand for instance
"The greater the amount to be sold, the smaller must be the price at which it is offered in order that it may find purchasers"
At least this snippet (ch.III, book III of Principles of Economics) reads the exact opposite.

Jaffa argues in Crisis of the House Divided that *Stephen Douglas* supported Manifest Destiny—which Schmitt praised in his horrific speech—because Douglas believed American institutions could span the western hemisphere and spread republicanism and self-governance.

Sen. Benjamin Wade introduced an amendment to the Fourteenth Amendment on the grounds that Sen. Fessenden implied(!) that not everyone born on American soil had always been born a citizen, and specifically said the children of diplomats would be the only exemption.

Also, saying you “just wanted to be her friend” after handing a reporter a wad of cash when that journalist was refusing what she thought to be a *bag of potato chips* is insane as well.

Assuming you mean Penn of Penn and Teller, yeah I think that’s been public knowledge for a couple years now. I’m not going to actually listen to this Reason Magazine pod abt the shift, but the quote from 2020 is interesting enough to share.

Also Complete Scoundrel for the specific Indiana Jones twist. I'm sure it's been covered elsewhere too but two examples seems like plenty.
