When cycling up a lane in the Chilterns...it's not a nice road/lane unless there's green in the middle...

Clear out of books/documents continues:

From 45 years ago(!) here is Don Mathew's classic publication for FoE.

I think Don is still around, I saw him at a FoE joint publication launch a few years ago...

Home clear out continues with clothes.

This hasn't been worn since at least the early noughties because of, er, the "revelations", which cast the phrase in a different light to that no doubt intended by Philosophy Football, lefty sports T shirt people.

RIP Robert Redford.

The clear out continues: these include "key texts":
* Mayer Hillman et al.'s "One False Move" showing how child pedestrian casualties decreased because of MORE road danger.
* Leeming's book is a self-pitying call for drivers not to be blamed and regrettably not just a hand book for extremist

On his watch, road space reallocation from general traffic to AT as specified in Local Transport Note 1/20, prompted by COVID lockdown, got on the agenda.
It was probably down to one Special Adviser, but nevertheless see Johnson's comment in "Gear Change: One Year On" here.

This bird joined us when we were having a chat in the garden, about as scared of predators as a Robin, I'd say.

What species, do you know?

6 weeks after surgery and I'm back on the bike! Still recovering, then there's the heat and effects of absence...not least an INCREASE in weight (partly) due to muscle coming back on.
But so pleased to be back in the saddle - nothing like it!

View from the bars at Gandalf Corner.

Clear out of 40 years worth of bike bits and pieces reveals this gel in one of the TEN seat packs I somehow seem to have acquired during that time.
Sell by date seems to be 86 or - more likely - 06.
Only nineteen years past sell by date, so it should be alright.

So it's clear out time!
Bits and pieces of cycling equipment + 2 bikes from the last 4 decades have to go, I want them to go to good homes (i.e. actually get used).
Contact me by DM here if you can get to north west London to pick up soon.

(How did I acquire NINE seat packs?)

*yours truly
* my brother with his pals Nicky and Tony.
In rural Hertfordshire a boy just needed a bike...

So I'm about half way through the transport books, more to come and I'm only about half way through the much greater volume of reports and other transport policy/planning and road safety files and documents.
Onwards...

...and back in time to 1976 with this!
There's a lot of punchy words ("Can we Kill the Car?") and images (see the front cover)...but:
Terence Bendixson presided over the Pedestrians Association for ages, but now I believe thinks that we have to accept the suburban car-centred dream.

And also: Here's the BMA report (written in 1997) by (now Professor) Adrian Davis on the health problems associated with the road transport system.

Reorganisation of the "office" proceeds and I am now on to radical transport books.
Here's a selection from the late 70s, mainly mid 80s.

For you young'uns, John Tyme (book out in 1979) led the anti-road protests of the 70s early 80s with John Adams leading his "2nd XI".

Here's a conference we ran in Leicester in 1999, including among others Ken Spence on the beginning of what was to become Bikeability.
AFAICR @christianwolmar.bsky.social was a late addition not on the programme giving an amusing brief introductory speech.
