We take the Expedition downtown. 24.9 liters of diesel power, 24 rows of seating for my 6 kids and their sports gear. 1.1mpg of freedom.

This breaks my heart while I buy beef/dairy at the grocery store. Then I'll drive home in my ford f350 super duty diesel grocery getter. All my food is bagged in 3 plastic bags so my 6 kids can carry them all at once.

I believe this can be semi-accomplished but it'll require work for every website.

Stat: outdoor cats kill an estimate 2-4 billion birds a year. This is in addition to the estimated 6-20 billion mammals killed by cats every year.
May 23, 2025 at 12:37 PM
Crazy stat: annually, US dogs and cats consume as much food as the entire nation of France.
May 23, 2025 at 12:34 PM
Another crazy stat: the yearly impact of owning 3 pets(dog or cat) is the equivalent of using a private jet. Not using a jet once, but the average private jet emissions for a year. That's huge.

I hear folks rage about "rich people's private jets" all the time.

I live in the PNW(pretty enviro focused) and I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about this. Only on the Internet.
May 23, 2025 at 12:26 PM
Here's a crazy stat: if US dogs/cats(~160 million) were their own nation, they would rank 5th in global meat consumption.

That's just mind boggling.

100% pet owners need to do better or stop owning pets. All these abandoned/orphaned animals are a direct result of "responsible pet owners". That's not even mentioning the insane environmental impact of pets(feeding, treating, cats killing birds, etc).

Both. People dislike degrowth because of capitalist/patriarchal propaganda and culture. It flies in the face of the idea that excess consumption/growth is a human right.

Thanks for proving my point. "Country vs country" is exactly the problem. We are one people. The divisions we use as justification are man-made. Borders arent real.
May 23, 2025 at 5:48 AM
It flies in the face of Manifest Destiny.

A large amount of people, whether they realize it or not, are in a race to the bottom because they feel entitled to consume as much as they want.

This hurts people's egos. Saying "You don't need that $5 Amazon toy" really upsets people's entitled ego.
May 23, 2025 at 3:12 AM
This only matters if you believe country comes before the world. It's very limiting to think this way and will always result in your alliance being used against you. Nationalism and patriotism are one degree away from each other.
May 23, 2025 at 3:11 AM
"people are unwilling to sacrifice" is 100% the problem. Everyone wants their status symbol foods, status symbol Amazon crap, they have to keep up with the Joneses on social media.

We have endless excuses for why everyone should consume more. Capitalism, baby!
