I spent 3 days in Chicago in mid-July for the Aspen Ideas Climate conference. It was my first visit to Chicago in 30 years. I was struck by how beautiful, clean, and park rich it was, and how friendly people were. I walked around day & night and felt safe.

I asked ChatGPT what the CA coast would look like without the California Coastal Act and this is what it produced. I think it’s fairly accurate.

I highly recommend Fire Weather by @johnvaillant.bsky.social He tells a compelling story about the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire and the world of climate change-driven fire we are now living in. It essentially foreshadows the LA fires.

LA County has a larger population than 40 states! We can get a lot of good work done at the local level.

According to 2022 OBM documents the government spent ~$170 billion on natural resource management in a $9.8 trillion dollar budget or 1.7%. This is about efficiency, but not govt efficiency. It’s about efficiently exploiting our public natural resources for private gain.

I put together this “Songs for the Resistance” play list. Many of the songs seem prescient, which goes to show these fights are not new. There’s probably too much Rage Again The Machine (mood). Please suggest any songs to add!

America's lead ocean agency is at risk.

From weather forecasting to ocean and coastal protections, Americans rely on NOAA's vital services every day to help us plan for natural disasters, reduce the impacts of pollution, and protect marine wildlife.
