Most sf people on BlueSky will probably disagree with this stance. I do think its an important opinion to voice, however, so we think clearly what we mean about free speech, which has to include speech we disagree with, including speech by people we despise. It's the essence of democracy.

I have no problem with F&SF deciding not to publish it. However, if there are no fascist elements in the story, and it's a good story, then I'm not sure why it shouldn't be published. I'm a free speech progressive: jail him for hate speech when he encourages hate; publish the story if its worthy.

If an editor with good taste liked the story enough to buy it, I'm not sure why it shouldn't be published. The story itself doesn't encourage hate. I'm writing as a free-speech liberal who draws the line at fiction that encourages hatred.
