This year @fireaside.bsky.social 's partner agencies identified nearly 23,000 combustible doormats, and those inspectors helped residents to take quick and easy action.

A fireproof doormat is a great daily reminder of how incremental changes can scale to remove risk. We're now giving them away!

Fire policy expert @michaelwara.bsky.social and team just released this paper, which matches what I've been thinking this year.

"We are confident that such an evolution can happen
for the crisis we are now facing in California."

Destructive wildfire is solvable.

Hey bike fam:

This fundraiser supports two things I love : public education and bikes.

I first did R4R in 2016 and it's inspired my bigger adventures. Just last month I rode (solo) from Oakland to Reno!

TIL: one of my earliest journalism friends and mentors, Paul Boutin, passed away at age 63.

Paul was brilliant, witty, and most of all, he was generous.

His funniest gift to me might be having penned this one line, which got me deleted off Wikipedia (to this day!):

Today, federal prosecutors announced the arrest of Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, "charging him with maliciously starting what became the Palisades Fire in January."

He has his first court appearance today in Orlando.

The criminal complaint is not immediately available.

Just out of curiosity, I checked the UC Riverside California Digital Newspaper Collection for uses of the term "defensible space."

Earliest ref as it pertains to fire appears to be in the 80s.

@latimes.com also wrote about it multiple times starting in the 90s:

Yesterday I learned: PG&E is set to spend over $5.5B on wildfire mitigation in 2026, which will rise to $6.4B the following year. (Or roughly 1/3 of its annual budget!)

That's an average of approx $1,000 per electricity customer, per year.

Today, I came across this GAO report from April 2005, which found that "defensible space" is one of the "most effective measures for protecting structures from wildland fire."

The decades-old science is crystal clear. Let's get to work.
