tbh i think it was actually the episode's writer who was responsible for the Xfiles scene (he was also at princeton at the same time), but the Prof in question was asked about it, and was convinced it was Duchovny that got his character hit by a bus - its also more interesting that way, anyway ;)

I’ve seen other similar positions (though not in beautiful 18th-century libraries…) advertised with “MLS or equivalent” but this one’s just “postgrad in librarianship or info science”. perhaps it’s worth trying (or at least) anyway, i tend to take things overly literally!
