I totally forgot to upload pictures of my progress last week before the showcase—I spent most of my time drawing backgrounds and getting them into both Unity and the itch page.

I just finished the writing for my third island! Players now have a random chance of dying to some of their choices. It’s not totally functional yet (I’m hunting down my syntax errors, wish me luck, I think I wrote half of it in python) but it will be soon.

All of the code for the basic gameplay is now done and functional; now I just need to make the pixel art, write stuff, and copy paste ALL THE THINGS. I’ll probably end up complicating this later with static variables, but for now I’ll enjoy the lack of error messages.

I actually started with the slide deck rather than the alpha build, because I needed to process and think through the mechanics before I could actually start building them. I think I’ve gotten it all sorted out now? Hopefully? lol, I’ll find out when I start implementing.

I’m almost finished with the first level of this game! The code is nearly written, I just have to hook everything up, but the textures are giving me trouble. I wanted thematic projectiles, but detailed materials don’t work with objects that small🥲

“I Very Much Don’t Want to Be Here” is dizzying, especially when the only manipulable square starts vibrating in circles. We weren’t able to figure out how to escape this room, but thinking through some possible solutions to the puzzle was interesting.

I started out making Space Invaders for the Project 3 demo, but I got distracted with the collision mechanics and now I have a bunch of yellow alien blobs enthusiastically ramming into each other. Oops? At least the player controls are working, lol!

“Nameless” is now published at quixoticanine.itch.io/nameless! It’s a short, interactive fiction game which lets players explore the moments between spawning in and getting their first quest. Who are you, in a game, before you get tangled up in the plot?

For Project 2, I’m making an interactive narrative. I decided to map out/write the entire thing in Twine first so that I can prune branches, edit the text easily, and see it all laid out before I commit to any code.

“Candybox 2” is an intricate game that’s entirely text-based; the author made a recognizable barn entirely out of dashes and slashes. The art style is both unique and remarkably clear.

I’m so out of practice coding, it’s actually hilarious. I’ve managed to mix up the letter cases for basic functions multiple times… and then I forgot to put the asset file into the scene before I tried to test it. Making an actual game will have to wait for tomorrow, lol!

I’ve had a lot of fun today experimenting with the different terrain tools, along with designing my own materials with Adobe Fresco. I can’t wait to finish sculpting the terrain and start texturing it!

We played “Titanic II - Orchestra for Dying at Sea”, and it was a profoundly strange experience. Wandering around finding different underwater artifacts was quite fun, though.

This is my first-ever experience with Unity, and the UI (particularly manipulating the viewpoint while you edit) is giving me some trouble. I am making progress, though! I just need to take it one wall at a time.
