The DART Silver Line in Dallas created two brand new car-train level crossings in the 2020s where it diverts from the existing rail ROW at Cypress Waters Station.

Many K-12 school districts here also have their own police forces.

Yeah, many planners who were at least in their 30s back in the 1960s experienced streetcars and interurbans so they were aware of their flaws.

I rode the Baltimore light rail with my family after riding the DC Metro before flying to Dallas. I immediately noticed how much slower and less pleasant it was than the DC Metro. We also had to make sure we didn’t miss the train back to the airport since it was less frequent than the DC Metro.

What about higher speed LRTs like Calgary or Edmonton?

The 1960s were also the era of the Civil Rights movement and the Great Society which alongside building metros also introduced Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, and other large programs.

Do you think North American with its suburbanization similar to NL should copy some aspects of their transit planning that you mentioned here?

You can have a higher per capita ridership than another city with a higher commute share if you have a lot of off-peak trips: pedestrianobservations.com/2019/12/26/o...
Off-Peak Public Transport Usage
Earlier this year, I slowly stumbled across something that I don’t think is well-known in comparative public transportation: European cities have much higher public transport ridership than s…

Not since at least industrialization have urban village movement patterns existed outside of a few isolated areas. This is because faster modes such as cars and trains have expanded the area where people commutes can be at most 30 minutes under the Marchetti Constant: pbs.twimg.com/media/F4---4...

So this would be around 21 km/h. If the Finch West LRT with a similar stop spacing was this fast, it would only take 29 minutes to travel the whole 10.3 kilometers.

Google maps says it takes 49 minutes to ride the line end to end.

Just look at Texrail, only 2,400 average weekday riders because so few suburban bus routes feed into it.

It kind of makes sense, the Munich S-Bahn has higher ridership than all NYC commuter railroads combined. If anything, Toronto should try to overtake current-day New York in total commuter rail ridership by turning GO into an S-Bahn.

And having no political parties at the local level meaning incumbents are less likely to lose for their failures.

I have seen Dallas Area Rapid Transit buses covered in ad-wraps (including their windows) for sports betting platforms. These ads could encourage people especially since DART riders tend to be lower income than the general population to gamble and lose money.

I think you’re confusing them with the driverless Paris Metro lines 1, 4, and 14. The RER is a mainline train, so it has drivers but no conductors.
November 13, 2025 at 10:46 PM
Another example is how commuter trains in the United States tend to have one or more conductors on board. In Germany and Switzerland, there is only a driver and the occasional roving fare inspector on regional and S-Bahn trains. The Paris RER also has driver-only operations.

Would municipal consolidation and/or creating a regional elected government to handle transit, regional planning, and other matters like how Storstockholms Lokaltrafik is controlled by Region Stockholm help improve the situation?

Canada should not be looking to inferior non-NYC US transit. They should look to Europe and Asia.
