Heat Happens ALL YEAR. We are experiencing hotter days more often throughout the year. Stay prepared for heat all year long, not just during the summer! Stay #HeatSafeLA Make a plan to check on those at high risk during heat waves. Have a first aid kit for treating heat-related illnesses, such as cool packs and rehydration solutions. Insulate your home and install reflective window films or shade to block out the sun’s heat. Plant a tree. Neighborhoods with trees feel 10 degrees cooler. Sign up for weather alerts and warnings in your area. Make a plan for power outages if you have medications that need refrigeration. Learn local evacuation routes in case of other emergencies. Heat stroke is a medical emergency - Call 911. #HeatSafeLA → Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness. Heat Exhaustion: Feeling tired, lightheaded, weak, or nauseated Heat Stroke: Temperature above 103°F, strong headaches, fast pulse Other signs: False contractions, heat rash, edema (swollen feet, legs, etc.), cramps, clammy skin, confusion, fast breathing, severe sunburn, and loss of appetite Tips for Hot Days: Drink 2 cups of water every hour Snack on hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, or celery Eat light meals that include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains Elevate your feet when resting to avoid feet swelling Wear a sun hat, sunscreen, and loose-fitting, light colored clothing Listen to your body and seek medical attention if you feel unwell Stay indoors or in shade when possible

Workers: Know Your Rights If you work outside, employers are required to provide shade when temperatures are over 80°F. If you work inside, employers must provide access to at least one cool-down area kept below 82°F. Employers must allow workers who ask for a cool-down rest period to take one. No limiten el acceso al agua; hagan pausas frecuentes. Ajusten o acorten las prácticas en calor extremo. Respeten decisiones médicas, de padres y estudiantes. When Is It Too Hot to Play? Heat stroke is the 3rd leading cause of sudden death in teen athletes. On extreme heat days, everyone—including coaches and parents—has a role in preventing heat illness. Coaches: You Set the Standard. Coaches are responsible for building a safe, heat-aware culture that involves athletes, parents, and medical staff. Gradually acclimate athletes to the heat. Do not limit water access and incorporate frequent water breaks. Modify or shorten practices in extreme temperatures. Respect medical staff, parents, and students’ decisions. Build a Heat Safety Plan. Every team should have a heat emergency plan and should incorporate heat safety into every drill and training. Set work-to-rest ratios. Be aware of sweat rate tracking. Use tools like NWS HeatRisk and CalHeatScore to assess risk. Remember, you don't need to make a diagnosis. If you think a player is exhibiting symptoms of heat illness, remove the player from the field and provide the appropriate treatment while someone else seeks medical attention. Remember: CIF schools must follow the Heat Illness Prevention and Acclimatization Policies under the CIF Extreme Heat & Air Quality Policy.

Don’t Play with a Teammate’s Health If your friend seems off during practice, don’t ignore it. Stop and tell your coach or trainer immediately- and if it’s heat stroke, CALL 911. Signs of Heat Stroke – CALL 911: Red, hot, dry skin Nausea Confusion Throbbing headache Fainting Slurred speech Vomiting Hydration = Performance Hydration isn’t just drinking water—it’s a strategy and key part of being a good athlete. Your body can’t compete if it’s overheated! Hydrate before you get thirsty. Drink water before, during, and after practice and games Cool down in the shade if you feel off If your sweat is leaving white marks on your clothes, you need to hydrate Consult your doctor and coach on how to play if you take certain medications
