100%. it's why i want to see traditional religions change (even if it's incredibly slow and difficult) rather than like, a post-religious world.

agreed! excellent points here. if there's one thing i keep coming back to, it's that individual church members can (and nearly always do) differ from the hierarchy.
November 19, 2025 at 12:08 AM
again, i feel like i’ve been clear in separating individual catholics (who of course have a variety of views) and the overall church leadership - if i’ve been unclear there it’s not my intent
November 18, 2025 at 9:58 PM
unfortunately i don’t see the contractions here that you’re seeing. happy to clarify but i’m at a bit of a loss here
November 18, 2025 at 9:54 PM
i’m speaking specifically about the catholic hierarchy there, but i fear there’s something i’m missing in your question
November 18, 2025 at 9:41 PM
see bsky.app/profile/celi..., it’s non-exclusive - there’s many good denominations and of course, many denominations have good views in some areas and not in others
that was snark but with a grain of truth, i admire a lot of what they, elca, etc are doing
November 18, 2025 at 9:38 PM
that's what tips it into envy. there's something they understand as being more valuable about academia vs like, 'just made vp'!
November 18, 2025 at 9:24 PM
i'm strongly positive on other denominations
November 18, 2025 at 9:00 PM
can you rephrase this? if it was unclear, i'm often speaking specifically of the tension between the catholic hierarchy being good on some issues (ie, immigration now, social or liberatory justice more broadly) and bad on others (being tacitly pro-conservative gov't in the usa, lgbt rights, etc)
November 18, 2025 at 9:00 PM
i think that's kind of a distinction without a difference, but to be clear i'm sure that op disagrees with the catholic hierarchy where it counts?
November 18, 2025 at 8:57 PM
i'll be the first to admit that i'm out of line, and i'm sorry for that - it's clear that me and op agree on significantly more than we disagree.
November 18, 2025 at 8:44 PM
to be clear - i don't know their individual stances, and can only assume they're significantly more liberal on many issues than the hierarchy
November 18, 2025 at 8:29 PM
i'm critical of the idea of having your politics led by religion (vs being a catholic who has some views in harmony with the church and others not), as well i'm more sympathetic to universalism
November 18, 2025 at 8:27 PM
but to the leadership this is unified - they're advancing the doctrinaire catholic position on everything
November 18, 2025 at 8:26 PM
oh if i was unclear - i'm saying that the leadership is doing good work/stances on immigration (and you can look at things like the recent usccb statement as being, i guess, negotiations of that?)
November 18, 2025 at 8:26 PM
...i'm sure they're good on all or most issues?
November 18, 2025 at 8:22 PM
which is why it's frustrating sometimes to see people laud for example, recent work with immigrants - while individual catholics can and do separate these, the leadership doesn't
November 18, 2025 at 8:20 PM
oh with the catholics you really have to go issue by issue. they're making up for some of the past as best they can, on the obvious key issues (lgbt rights, reproductive rights, women's rights) they understand themselves as being unable to change doctrine aside from on the margins
November 18, 2025 at 8:19 PM
that was snark but with a grain of truth, i admire a lot of what they, elca, etc are doing
November 18, 2025 at 8:10 PM
do you think all catholics support or believe in everything the magisterium teaches? because i sure don't
November 18, 2025 at 8:07 PM
bsky.app/profile/celi... pretty much this. the institutional catholic church is good on some issues and very cowardly on others! individual catholics might be good on all issues (laudable!)
this but with extra universalism
