'Popular culture' as it currently manifests itself is only able to gain its appeal in this cultural environment. Its most effective (and therefore most profitable) iterations are contingent upon giving audiences a reflected image of their neurotic self, only presented in a flashy and idealized way that makes them feel as if the solution is not a treatment of their neuroses but instead their intensification. The more intense capitalist domination becomes, the more severe these neuroses will manifest, and thus, the more strongly audiences will demand a glorification of such neuroses within popular culture as treatment.
