Hello all, I would like this placed on the agenda for the May 22, 2025 Budget Committee meeting. My primary mode of transportation is my bicycle, and that should be okay in this city. Unfortunately, some members of council vehemently disagree with that. I deserve to be integrated with the city I have called home my entire life and I deserve to belong in my city. I deserve to navigate it in a safe and cost-effective way. Not driving a car does not make me less of a Londoner. And believe me, I thought the opposite was the case not too long ago. A few years ago, when I got my G2 license, I bought a car for the first time. It turned out to be a lemon and I spent a substantial time in and out of mechanic's shops having to fix every little problem with my 15-year-old Dodge Magnum. I stuck with the car for two years because I felt the pressure to be like "everybody else", "the majority", and "in touch" with "everyday Londoners", among other buzzwords. As my invoices came in, my credit card bills grew, my brain started to melt down. Then came a point where I wanted no more. Before selling my car in January 2024, I left my car in the driveway and turned to my bicycle. As I returned to two wheels, I noticed once again how unkind this city is to people who don't drive. And that is a deliberate choice created by our city's decision makers. The opposition to Londoners who cycle, walk, bus, and roll throughout the city is done under the guise of "what the majority of tax-paying Londoners want". Alt text continues Well, I pay taxes to the City of London and I couldn't care less about road widenings or new roads. So do a lot of other people who think like me. And you have to represent all of these people, whether you agree with them or not. I am so done with this "tyranny of the majority" rhetoric. I urge all councillors to shut down item 4.3 and get back to the legitimate business of governing. I am so done with having to beg for respect and play nice as a Londoner when the people on the other side are mean-spirited and malicious. To cancel any thought of constructing new cycling infrastructure means that cyclists may find themselves back in cars, clogging up our city's roads, and being the traffic that you hate so much. It also means that other cyclists who do remain on their bikes would ultimately find unsafe ways to get around London, and could find themselves injured or dead at the hands of drivers. I believe it would be beneficial to review and potentially reconsider currently approved future cycling lane projects (that have not yet been contracted). This opportunity for Council to review and consult with the public on the location, capital costs and ongoing maintenance costs of future cycling lane investments could provide some portion of the needed tax relief currently being sought. I will be moving this motion (or a slightly amended version). I have a seconder in Councillor Van Meerbergen: That Civic Administration be DIRECTED to report back to Council with a list of all approved future cycling lane projects, their location, timeline, budgeted capital costs, source of funding and estimated annual maintenance costs with the intention that Council will consult with the public and potentially delay or cancel some of these projects. To the members of the Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee, I am writing to oppose the motion to direct city staff to widen Wonderland Road as soon as possible, and to look at building a ring road around the city’s perimeter. Constructing bus rapid transit on much of Wonderland Road will carry more people along that corridor than constructing a corridor for individuals in their respective cars. The fact that the staff reports state that transit times on Wonderland from the north end to the south end could be as much as 63 minutes in 2050 under a 6-lane general traffic scheme, is reason enough not to do it. Transit users in our city are commuting heroes to some degree. Imagine if every rider on the Route 10 bus had their own car and commuted along Wonderland Road? Transit users on that corridor deserve so much better than to be stuck on the Guy Lombardo Bridge. I know this all too well, as I went to high school in Northwest London. Enhanced transit infrastructure should have been a thing in that area, and the whole city a long time ago. And I think we should move on from the ring road. What happens when Middlesex Centre and the county balk at the cost of such a road? And will Queen’s Park or Ottawa want to foot the bill for this, when they’ve demonstrated they are funding part of the rapid transit currently under construction? Does this city have so much unprocessed trauma in its past that its decision makers do not believe that different ideas to better it are possible? We have to go back to the old and tired ring road idea, or widen the road. London, Ontario is a great city and I do my best to sell the place to people, but unfortunately its decision makers don’t have the best priorities. I want to live in a city where we can be so much more than “we can easily drive from point A to point B”. I want to live in a city where everyone counts, is a part of it, and they can be their best. A plan to keep us stuck in traffic, drive up our tax bills, and exclude people who do not drive, is not it. The best time to have tackled traffic jams and improved transportation options for this city was a decade ago before we screwed up and ditched light rail transit and cancelled rapid transit in North London and West London, in 2016 and 2019, respectively. There is so much more we can be. Councillors, please vote against a motion to widen Wonderland to six general traffic lanes and to reopen the ring road idea. Sincerely, Cedric Richards
