New #openaccess paper on Petralona (Greece) hominin skull puts the min age at 286 k years with estimates to the maximum at 410 k or 539 k depending on its original context. This puts it in range of the morphologically similar Kabwe (Zambia) fossil #fossilfriday (almost) doi.org/10.1016/j.jh...

Went from Eland's Bay Cave on the west coast through the Franschheok pass and then down to De Hoop today. Exploring fynbos vegetation and geology all the way along.

Another game of guess that artefact! This time from one of my own sites, a small trash pile near Colorado Springs. The team has a bunch of info already but they want the final details on this glass bottle! 🏺 #Historical #archaeology

We have a winner, thank you @archaeocore.bsky.social! My student just found an image of an old school desk leg that looks just like this. The triangle piece fits to the bottom of the seat I'm assuming to let the seat flip up given the back view of the part and the longer part connects to the back.

Who's ready for another round of identify the artefact? This time it's a curved metal bar of some kind found in an #archaeology site in southern Colorado. 🏺 Tagging a couple people below but feel free to reply-tag some more! @hknorton.bsky.social @folsom8k.bsky.social

#whatsthisartefact! Happy Friday, anyone have any idea what this weird spiral aluminium lid goes to? Somewhere between 1920s to 1960s is best guess based on other artefacts.

New paper in JAS analyses the encised bear bone found in a 130 ka Neandertals site in Poland. They conclude the marks were symbolic, intentional, single-session & made by a right-handed person cutting towards themselves (inconsistent with butchery, etc.) 🏺🧪 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

No this is great! I use Cura as a slicer too and have been using Meshlab occasionally but I can't figure out how to "fill" the teeth. Meshlab's "fill holes" didn't work and I'm not sure how to set Cura's settings to fill up this void inside the tooth. Like support but at 100% density or something?

Gotta love book mail! New book co-edited by two PhD students at U de Montreal, there are lots of great chapters in here divided into "top down" and "bottom up" approaches: "Modelling Human-Environment Interactions in and beyond Prehistoric Europe" 🏺🧪 link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

Interesting new study attributes the slightly robust and chinned Homo sapiens mandible found in Klasies River Mouth Cave 1B, South Africa in the 1980s to pre-110 ka, maybe as old as MIS 6 or pre-125 ka #openaccess 🏺💀🧪 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I'm far from an expert here but looks like it's there to me. Sometimes it just takes a little time to show up? I'm not really sure how it works. I think on the science feed it has to be approved, not sure about arch/Anth
