I have two daughters who were magna and summa cum laude at a top business college, and I'm so proud of them.

And while the replies posted are tedious, they're coming from people you don't know letting you know you're much better off for it.

I understand you were in gifted programs yourself, so I won't disregard your experience, particularly if you lost friends as a result, but I think their intent is to keep children challenged and engaged, so they don't end up pointing in the wrong direction.

The point is the gifted programs aren't about bragging rights, or creating separation among the kids, though we know some children aren't nice.

They're meant to help keep some children engaged, just as tech programs are available to the child who can tear apart a radio, but not tear open a book.

She was accepted and totally changed her effort, all the way through college, where she graduated with highest honors. That made me proud, because it took hard work on her part. I was a gifted student, but you could easily distract me if you gave me a more fun option.

A week later I got a phone call from the principal saying we needed to move my daughter to first grade.

Skip ahead four or five years and we were having problems with her doing homework. Something led me to think she was bored, so I told my wife that I hoped she'd get into the gifted program.

She said there was an area with books that she could read by herself. I said I didn't want my daughter sitting by herself and essentially treading water for the year, so I suggested placing her into first grade. The principal and I started arguing, but the next week my girl started kindergarten.

I'll give you a counter argument.

We were at a meeting for our daughter to enter kindergarten. The principal said they'd learn the ABC's, count to 20, and start to read by year's end, yet our girl had picked up on those from her older sister, so I asked what they do when the child's at that level.

How about tattoos for guys that want to, um, show off during their chin-ups?
