For all its flaws, the UN human rights system is worth defending, and the Trump admin’s refusal to participate in it signals its intent to continue to upend civil rights, persecute immigrants, facilitate genocide, and expand the scope and cruelty of its criminal legal system.

The US is set to become the first country to ever avoid the UN Universal Periodic Review, a mechanism started in 2008 to review member states’ compliance with standards of international human rights.
