Attempts to retire have so far failed. Astrophotography on a budget, general photography, music, tech, interesting facts, all things quirky. Try to avoid politics but sometimes can't resist.

Hi all, I've just joined Bluesky. Rex would like to say hello too.

Captured this image of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) shortly before I joined BlueSky and forgot to post it. Taken in twilight from the North York Moors.

Everyday Astronaut getting quite excited by the return of the super heavy booster. And listen to that sonic boom!
What it’s like to watch a #Starship Super Heavy booster fall from space and be caught by the launch tower it took off from!!! That was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen in my entire life!!! So glad I was able to see it in person this time!

Here's an interesting but useless fact: the combined mass of all the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid 19) virus particles in the world (even at the height of the pandemic) is less than 10kg.

This week the Guardian's owner, the Scott Trust, gifted the 233-year-old Observer to Tortoise Media.

This isn't just a dark day for journalism, it's a sign.

Meet the team.

NEW: Why do we always think crime is rising, even when it isn’t?

This week I looked at one of the big data mysteries. Britain is 2/3 less violent than the 1990s; thefts were higher pre-lockdown

Why, then, doesn’t it feel like it?

This.
How privatisation works (and Thames Water is just the latest example).
1. A government takes a national asset built up with taxpayers' money and the work of public servants over many years, and hands it, for a fraction of its value, to a private company.
2. In doing so, it creates a monopoly.

Here's a handy tool to help find relevant people to follow.
Here's a useful tool for Bluesky

Type your account name in and activate

It will come up with a list of the accounts followed by the people you follow..

If you type in your password it will give that list with an optional follow button to make life easy.

Try it 💙💙

It seems to me that #socialmedia platforms go through a four stage lifecycle:
1 User Growth - a new friendly platform grows its user base. Good times.
2. Engagement growth - algorithms take over to maintain financial growth.
3. Chaos - bots move in.
4. Collapse - people leave to a new platform.
