full moon
round, yellow at dawn

and clouds drawn in charcoal lines
against a deep slate sky

three clouds cross the moon
their silhouette, a shadow scratched
the night's clouds clawing at the light
as the sky turns to morning

the cloud middle is murky
but the edges shine bright

glowing fractals of dissipating and becoming
the edges are alight
turning air into cloud and cloud into air
vaporous sun-fire
in between existing and not

two red-tailed hawks circle
charcoal shadows against the cloudy sky
looping, crossing
dipping low over the auto services center
the asian grocery
the pub

then return to their utility pole perch
no rabbit for breakfast today

gray skies today, but backlit
so shapes swirl into being
an anchor for a ship moored in heaven
long slender fingers, reaching
a cloudy twitter-bird in flight

but just along the horizon, clear skies
along that thin line below the clouds
I see the sun rise

dust drifting, sparkling
sunlight catching each particle
a constellation suspended
between bus riders dozing, scrolling

then the workers in the street ahead finish emptying bins into the garbage truck

the bus pulls away, back into shadow

in the cold moments before dawn
the lake wears a fluffy hat
knit of pinks and lavenders and golds
glowing

I wear a scarf
woven of white and burgundy threads
not glowing
but warm enough

autumn, at last

today I feel gravity
connecting, pulling me down

sometimes I lose my balance and think, perhaps,
I stayed still while the earth turned beneath me

but no, it would be much worse, much more than a stumble

today, though
it's just gravity holding things together

randomly awake @ 5:30am

to discover the laundry in the dryer isn't dry
to finish that last bit of paperwork
to make myself hot breakfast
to hear the birds outside
to feel the warm breeze
to watch the street lamps turn off, one-by-one, then all at once

what emerges from the mist?
cars rushing into sight, then fading away
figures shuffling into view, then eventually disappearing
even squirrels, as they climb into vanishing trees

all to a raucous soundtrack of birds
who want us to know the sun is up

tonight:
thunder and lightning
an occasional firecracker

now rain
dripping down windowpanes
running along garden leaves
soaking sidewalks and soil

tomorrow:
puddles for splashing
berries for eating

6yo on Cruella de Vil:
She’s wearing a tank top and wants to make dogs into clothes. She should just wear a long-sleeve shirt.

fog reaches around raindrops
leaves, blades of grass

around car wheels, eaves, umbrellas

the world is bright
but invisible

the sun rises and shines

behind the clouds

the clouds climb along the ground
watering the air

look up:

a world inverted
water floats on air

the same wind blows
in between
wavelets multiplying

a sea of ripples
above our heads

now breathe.

branches reach skyward
a multitude of skeletal fingers grasping sunlight

just now
so many little green buds scattered across twigs

soon unfolding into clouds of leaves, billowing across the urban forest

spring beginning

on the weather: puff puff puff
all together now

so many little cloud poofs
become a long fluff fish
swimming in the afternoon light

chasing the big clouds away

the weeping birch outside my front door is sick
borers infested it before we bought the house over a decade ago
when the bank had it pruned at the wrong time of year

leaves shade our windows in summer
and yellow pollen paints the porch in spring
but its bark peels in large pieces

a tired tree

I took my 5-yr-old to the protest
He got tired, so I held both signs and he sat on my feet
like a baby penguin
He noticed penguin signs
He shouted along with the chants
then asked if Trump knew what we were doing
Kind of? Maybe?
He was tired
then someone gave him a noisemaker to blow

clouds drift across the sky
thoughts formed, changing, fleeting, dispersing
projections of the weather’s mind

perhaps rain tomorrow
maybe even snow

important decisions.

on reincarnation/stars: 7yo asks what will happen after she dies

we don't know, for sure

will she come back as something else?

maybe?

she'd prefer a bird
but will she remember being a person?
she knows we're all stardust, you know, from dead stars

so, my dear, do you remember being that star?

today the clouds are finely textured threads stretched across the sky,
like gray fiberglass insulation thinly wrapped around the earth,
warming, sparkling in sunlight
above the wind
above the chaos
above the geese flying north

I printed this edition of geese flying (in space? out of the sun?) and then walked out of the building to see a flock of geese in a perfect V flying low just overhead. flying north.

my papa planted a spruce by our driveway in alaska. the front yard was tundra, but the house created a windbreak, so the tree grew tall. ten years ago, they sold the house. I looked at some pics on Zillow when it came up for sale again. front yard is now a parking lot.
