I think Chernobyl, then Lockerbie. Lockerbie felt more shocking, but after the Chernobyl news came out a local man drove around shouting at everyone to stay in doors and keep their windows closed which made it feel ominous. (Everyone thought he was nuts.)
What's the first major news story you remember as a child?
Challenger for sure. After that the next one I remember vividly was the Berlin Wall. Then the invasion of Kuwait. Obviously other things happened between those but I'm talking off the top of my head.

The Challenger explosion. I remember watching the footage on the little B&W TV that only came out of the closet for space shuttle launches and presidential speeches.

Birmingham New Street is the worst railway station in the world. Not an original thought, I'm sure, but I just needed to get it out of my system.
