The best birthday party we ever organized, we found a retired snake wrangler who showed up with three constrictor snakes in duffle bags. Everybody had a blast except one kid.

I've heard Schwartz tell the story several times, but I can't remember when the shift happened, maybe Giuliani? I can't find any old uniform photos, but I think the uniforms were brown?

IIRC this is also the recommendation from "Gridlock Sam" Schwartz (former NYC DOT Commissioner). This used to be the case, until parking enforcement was merged with the DOT (possibility for safety concerns?)

On a related note, I've been wondering what this bubble will leave in it's wake (the dot com bubble launched thousands of Aeron chairs into the world). Lots of cheap graphics cards? Natural gas power plants in remote locations?

Are there other periods of wholesale (successful) replacement of the bureaucratic machinery after corruption? The adoption of "scientific government" to replace Tamany Hall and the patronage system in NYC comes to mind, but only because I reread "The Power Broker" recently.

Haha I peaked with a 300 CD changer- but quickly realized that indexing and organizing it was futile. Last saw it when I regifted it to my father-in-law, who apparently went through the same one week process of inserting his whole CD collection before realizing it was a useless gadget.

Hasn't the FDNY's policy about battery storage changed fairly recently? IIRC they were vehemently against high-capacity batteries because of the difficulty with fighting Lithium-ion battery fires.

There was a brief golden window when we realized we could take our son, sleeping in his car seat, to the loud restaurants around the corner and he would stay asleep while we enjoyed pizza and an adult beverage.
