I love the way the white slip and black underglaze drips mirror each other here. Not deliberate, and the underglaze was applied after the slip had already been bisque fired, but a very happy accident.

Done some product/portfolio/archival shots of the pots I’m taking to the show next week and you know what I think some of them turned out ok in the end. I’m slowly getting better at this, maybe.

A white bottle-shaped vase that has been squeezed and distorted. A similarly distorted bottle-shaped vase, in a weird sort of dribbly stone grey and iron brown glaze. A small espresso cup in a tenmoku (different shades of brown, from pale beige through rich chocolate to a metallic near-black) Two espresso cups in a pale blue-grey glaze. One of them has patches of metallic iron oxide at the rim.

What was a bottle in its former life has been squished and squeezed forming several large indentations in its sides. It’s been glazed in a soft satin white glaze, and there are brown specks of iron across its surface that have lifted from the clay underneath.

I was going to question the fact that 45% of the “contrarian youth” are over 35 but then I remembered this is right wingers and for a lot of Conservative Party associations, being under 75 counts as the youth wing.

Made a Tall Pot. 27cm, about 1.1kg of clay, only nearly collapsed twice.

A tall pot. It’s not very exciting beyond that I’m afraid. It’s narrow at the base and widens slightly toward the top, and there’s a little indent below the rim which flares out slightly. It’s not especially pretty or well proportioned but it *is* tall.

A small espresso cup. The form is roughly square but slightly tapers toward the rim. It has been gas fired and is glazed in a blue-green colour with rusty iron around the rim, running slightly onto the body.

Meant to slip these too and forgot so went into the studio early to spray and wrap them, then came back later to slip them. Think I about managed it - hoping it doesn’t crack off in the firing.
The same bowls from yesterday, on a shelf, this time with white slip applied around the middle of the bowl, in a loose, textured fashion.

Trimmed these today. I didn’t love them when I’d thrown them but I’m glad I went with it because I think the final form (for three of them, at least) is pretty nice. #ceramics #pottery

The “friendship ended with Mudasir” meme, except it’s Sam Altman and Jeff Bezos, the word “Mudasir” has been replaced with the Microsoft logo and the word “Salman” has been replaced by the Amazon logo. Kiln pickup day! Pretty pretty happy with this - a combination of the hakame/underglaze decoration I’ve been using for a while with the squashed pots I’ve been experimenting with more lately.

The vase is a buff/beige clay, and it has white slip loosely applied around the lower portion of the vase, and a deep black arch shape brushed on over that. The whole pot is glazed in a glossy transparent, and it is slightly and deliberately misshapen. The same vase from a slightly different angle, showing how it was squashed and deformed in the making process - there are large indentations on the facing sides where the underglaze decoration has been applied.

Shadows, how do they work
A header image from the Laguna Kilns website. It shows what appears to be a California beach scene with a lifeguard tower, sandy beach and boardwalk bordered by a wavy white concrete barrier. Along the barrier, the words "LAGUNA KILNS" have been added, there are two large, incongruous kilns on the boardwalk itself, and there's a metal sculpture of a bike that, despite having hollow wheels, is casting a solid shadow, at a different angle to everything else in the scene. The whole thing appears to have been generated - partially if not entirely - by AI.

Somehow me and another person at the pottery studio made a set of almost millimetre-identical cups, entirely independent of each other, and not even referencing the same source design. I genuinely thought I was going mad when I’d glazed all of mine and then found another one.
A small bisque-fired ceramic cup. It is about 8cm wide at the base and is about the same tall, tapering very slightly towards the rim, and has a slight indentation and bump around the base. The surface is a little imperfect but that can be sanded down.
