Behr draws on a huge range of scholarship across history, theology, criticism, and philosophy to break assumptions of traditional Johannine interpretation while remaining highly coherent. At times a dense read but never uninspiring.

I was astonished by the precision and care with which Cornwall elevates so many forms of trans and gender variant experiences in this book. A master class in richly life-affirming Christian theology in every way. This book is a treasure.

Like the topics it discusses, this is a multivalent, entangled book. Its highly creative approach to trinitarian exposition shows how the doctrine destabilizes privileged binaries in profound ways.

Excited to read more of Coakley after this collection of essays. I was struck by her lines of thought regarding the Eucharist as an inherently gender-destabilizing ritual. I also think her trinitarian reading of mystical theology will be crucial in establishing a theology of transgender experience.

Finished this over the weekend. Short but broad in scope, with a mix of obscure ideas and strong insights. I also enjoyed the highly interactive footnotes from translator Catharine P. Roth.

I really like Behr’s rigorous textual criticism which opens a new perspective on a heavily reinterpreted theologian.
