I thought I wouldn't use this knowledge again so soon, but I have similar work at my new job!
I'm also slow-cooking a talk on this subject (working title: "Principles of sharing UX: Everybody dies, and anybody could be a bad actor" 😂). If you want a sneak peek/want to collaborate, reach out to me! 😁

*And BTW #2: WOW we learned so much about sharing UX (tip: the most complex, rip-your-hair-out part is in the enforcement UX) and how to tackle a proper sharing infrastructure even if your product has gone years without one (TLDR: I do not recommend doing things in that order).

Many thanks to my former colleagues and partners at Google Home who are carrying the work forward. This is just the first step toward giving Google Home users the sharing control that they've been asking for.

BTW, this effort was SUPER complex after years of features and infrastructure built without access tiers as a requirement, and I'm pretty proud of how much we could cover with only two tiers, and only two additional settings for the lower tier.*

If you're in Public Preview for the Google Home app, you'll be able to try it out right now, or you'll see it soon (the launch may still be ramping).

Tip: Don't remove any members just yet, if you don't see this UX in the Home app as part of the add-a-person flow:

...but an admin tier is not suitable for many residents like teens and kids...or that roommate you just met on Craigslist.

And the connected home should be for everyone!

Including this guy:

Alt: A young bearded man wearing a football-style jersey that says, "RESIDUDE" is asking "Where should I put my suff?" as he holds up a suitcase that falls open, and drops out a lot of dirty debris.

I kept this effort alive because previously, Google Home supported only one member tier: co-equal members with full administrative privileges.
(Tangent: there's an Oprah GIF for anything in my work life.)

Multiple co-equal admins are necessary* & fantastic for partners, spouses, trusted people...

And I enjoy Android Police's framing of it:

When you're one of hundreds of applicants, recruiters and hiring managers can and will forget about you!
Staying on top of your comms & responsiveness can make a difference because you remember to follow up.

#job-hunting #tip 6: If you don't already, track your applications & comms in a spreadsheet/your tool of choice:
- Dates of correspondence
- Recruiter/hiring manager names
- Links
- Info sent your way...

You can tell when recruiters/hiring managers don't do this (interpret that clue how you like).

2. A presentation version—something you can present 1 slide at a time (Figma/slide deck).

And since reading text right from slides is a sucky presentation experience and some viewers might be seeing your preso on a meeting room screen, you'll need much less text & larger visuals (for legibility).

1. A standalone version. This can be a website, Figma file, or a slide deck. But it'll need lots more content to cover the context w/o you voicing over it.

But your text & images can be smaller, because your audience can read this at their leisure from their computers.

And 2nd, you'll also need:

#job-hunting #tip 5: For UX designers, unfortunately, I've concluded that you do need 2 portfolio versions—one people can read before talking w/ you, and one for presenting.

The visual aid needs for presentations are just very different from those of standalone portfolios.

So first you'll need:
