New year goal is to practice how not to take myself too seriously. Work harder. Exercise more. Waste less time doomscrolling. ..

Yup…
Yes, elite places = elite reproduction, and that was part of the difficulty... But getting absolutely ground into bone dust was really good for me intellectually, even if there are still scars.
I also got to see the nasty side of US elite culture, which taught me quite a lot.

“Human rights shouldn’t be conditioned on having good politics.” This.
Americans did and do not have the capacity to think this about Uyghurs, Tibetans and Hong Kongers. It’s been frustrating even if looking at human rights shouldn’t be conditioned on having good politics

one reason for this is how few US newsrooms are willing to interview and hire immigrant and international journalists due to legal costs for work visas, and how often non-white immigrant perspectives are considered 'bias' instead of expertise
kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

oh god, assuming what Chinese students think/do already. Classic Economist. Geez.
Just read an @economist.com article that guessed that Chinese students were one of the few groups that slip through the social media monitoring due to already internalising self policing behaviour, which is probably why Chinese students had to be singled out separatly for special attention.
